Going to take a brief break from editing my book to talk about the three things you need in order to edit your book. Of course, there are more things you need to edit your book than just three things.
For one, you need a book to edit, but assuming that that thing is already something you had before you decided to get started editing, I am going to winnow down editing needs to just un-obvious things… like a pen.
You Need Patience
Patience is the sort of thing you can’t buy. though, if you could—I’d like five patience, please.
Patience will get you through the hard times when your eyes are straining, your brain is straining and you just want to be done with it! Do you hear me! I want to be done!
You Need Coffee
Coffee, at least for me, is a must. It’s the only way I know how to edit and write. Coffee makes a great companion, because it’s always there, warm, inviting, and ready to be sipped.
At no time should you attempt to spill coffee onto your keyboard or manuscript. Whereas this will solve your patience problem by single-handedly destroying your manuscript and thus making the editing processes end abruptly, this would have a bad effect on your overall editorial morale and your writerly dreams.
If you don’t drink coffee. I’m truly sorry.
You Need to Step Away
Step away from your manuscript. That is, after all, what I am doing right now. I am stepping away from my manuscript. You have to know when to give your self some time. You need to know when to give yourself a break.
The important thing about art is that you have to give your mind the ability to be free of the rigid confines of your own self-set deadlines, to give it the space it needs to recuperate, to create, to daydream. Because without time, without space and without daydreaming, you will stifle your own story, and future stories to come.
So, remember these three important ‘needs’ for editing.
Be patient, not just with your manuscript, but with yourself (aka don’t be hard on yourself); drink coffee (or really, just have something beside you to keep you company and hydrated); step away (always give yourself the space to create and recreate).
Those are three things you need when editing your book.
Now back to editing.
